How Transferring a Domain from One Hosting Provider to Another Works

If you are a senior living operator and you have just purchased a community from another company, you probably are in the process of setting up a new website for your community. To ensure you can transfer your domain from one account to another without site interruption, follow the steps below:

  1. Connect your community’s domain (www.example.com) to the old server with the original owner. This domain is usually housed in a platform like GoDaddy.com or domains.com.
  2. Set up a new website hosting server.
  3. Your new site should be built and designed on the new server.
  4. Point the domain to the new site (on the new server), using the new site’s IP address.
  5. Only then can the domain be transferred from one account to another without site interruption.

It’s a tricky process. You can think of it like a cell phone number when you change carriers, in which the cell phone number represents your community’s domain and each carrier symbolizes a server.

In order to use the same phone number (domain) on a new carrier (server), you must start an agreement with the new carrier first, then associate your phone number with the new carrier.

If you attempt to transfer your domain to another account before associating it with the new server, there is a good chance your website could become disconnected. Instead, connect to the new server first, then start the process of transferring the domain to a new account. This transfer process can take days to complete, so you’ll want to give yourself plenty of lead time.
